I highly recommend the book it is technically brilliant and the story is great, and I very much suspect I’m going to love it on a repeat read knowing all the spoilers, but you should go into it knowing that this book comes with a main character who loathes himself, is very self-critical, and worries quite intensely about pretty much everything without being able to reframe his thoughts positively. I went into the book knowing this but because Hall has written the inner voice of an intense and continuous anxiety spiral so well it made it very difficult for me to read without feeling some of the feelings Paris was suffering just that little bit too much and certainly more than a reader should. The clue is in the title and the content guidance paragraph at the beginning: Paris has an anxiety disorder. The book is brilliantly written and tackles issues that need to be written about more, but Alexis Hall does it so well it got to the point that I found Paris Daillencourt too relatable. However, my five stars are coming with a trigger warning. I’ve never seen the Bake Off, which this book’s fictional show ‘Bake Expectations’ is undoubtedly based on, but setting a story within the format of a television show is a fantastic idea and Alexis Hall has pulled it off wonderfully again in his second book set within the world of a baking competition. ‘The writing is witty, and chemistry is irresistible, but it’s Hall’s insights about trust and self-worth that set the story apart.
